@mikemonnette How I had jeans made for @abbreviatedapparel without any formal design training. It's a very iterative, logical, trial and error process, and my manufacturing partner was a huge help along the way, but for anything I didn't know how to do, google and youtube were amazing resources. #abbreviatedapparel #smallbusinessownertips #smallbusiness #fashion #design#fashiondiy #menswear #mensfashion ♬ original sound - Mike
Finding the Perfect Reference
The journey began with a treasure hunt through vintage stores. I needed a reference sample to send to my manufacturer. After finding a pair that matched my vision, I cut the jeans in half and sent one leg to the manufacturer. This way, we both had a standard to compare future samples to.
Nailing Down the Fit
Next, I took measurements from a few pairs of jeans I owned. This helped me zero in on the desired fit. Along with these measurements, I sent detailed instructions for threads, buttons, care labels, and a measuring guide to the manufacturer. It was crucial to get every detail right from the start.
Choosing the Right Fabric
The manufacturer sent me several fabric options. After careful consideration, I selected the one that felt perfect for the jeans. The first sample was ready to be made.
Testing and Tweaking
When the sample arrived, I wore the jeans for about a week. As a 5'8" individual, I acted as the fit model since my target customers are shorter men. I wanted the inseam and scaled-down details to be just right. After a week, I made a few tweaks to the fit and wash.
Perfecting the Measurements
The most challenging part was scaling the roughly 50 measurement points for each size. To get this right, I bought multiple sizes of jeans from other brands. Analyzing these jeans helped me understand how to approach the measurements for my own brand.
Finalizing the Product
With the next round of samples in hand, I made sure the fit, fabric, and wash were perfect. Satisfied with the outcome, I placed the purchase order.
Success and Expansion
The jeans received rave reviews, boasting a 5.0 rating. Encouraged by the positive feedback, I introduced a second wash color and am currently working on a third.
Starting a clothing brand from scratch, especially without formal training, is challenging but incredibly rewarding. Every step, from sourcing vintage samples to perfecting the fit, has been a learning experience. Now, I have a product that not only fits well but also resonates with my customers.
