When my wife and I first started dating, I wanted to take her backpacking.
She wasn’t outdoorsy. Didn’t grow up camping. No real desire to sleep on the ground or eat freeze-dried chili mac. But I had this vision of us out there together — hiking toward alpine lakes, cooking camp meals, waking up zipped into the same sleeping bag with a mountain view. I didn’t force it. I just eased her in.
First I showed her the parts I thought she’d like — the cozy stuff. The views. The food. The warm sleeping bag built for two.
Then I started small. A car camping trip. A one-nighter. Eventually we worked up to real backcountry stuff. And I took care of the logistics: packed her gear, mapped the route, made sure it would be a good time.
Now she loves it — in her own way. There are still some trips she opts out of. And that’s fine.
So — if you're trying to get the guy in your life into wider pants, here’s the lesson:
1. Show, don’t tell.
Pull up some style inspo. Pictures that reflect the kind of look you know he’d pull off. Gauge the reaction. Adjust from there. If he’s not into the vibe, it’s going to be an uphill battle.
2. Take it slow.
If he’s still deep in the slim-fit phase, don’t shove him straight into a pair of baggies. Start with a straight fit. Maybe a relaxed taper. Let him feel it out.
3. Make it easy to say yes.
Do the work — order a few options. Add a couple shorter shirts to balance the silhouette. Try some full outfits. And if it looks good, let him know.
