@mikemonnette New Selvedge Jeans! I didn't want to go full baggy but I wanted something wider than the slim-straight indigo jeans I currently have, so I went by @selfedge in LA and they receommended the 1947 Straight Leg from Sugar Cane. They're made in Japan from 14.25 oz double ringspun 100% cotton on original narrow shuttle looms from the 1930's. They have some great historical details. I went with a full break since the last pair of selvedge denim I bought ended up shortening by an inch or so after a few washes, and I'm kinda loving the look with the full break - they remind me a little bit of the 3rd cut from our legacy with the way they're puddling on my foot, even though they're not a flare. Excited to see how these break in - lmk what you think! #menswear #selvedgedenim #mensstyle #mensstyleguide #mensfashion #classicstyle #timelessstyle #style #fashion #mensclothes #clothes ♬ Like This (Lofi) - ProdByDave
I recently picked up a new pair of selvedge jeans, and I’m excited to share all the details. I didn’t want to go full baggy, but I was definitely looking for something wider than the slim-straight indigo jeans I already own. So, I swung by Self Edge in LA, and they recommended the 1947 Straight Leg from Sugar Cane.
These jeans are a reproduction of the 1947 Levi’s 501s and are packed with historical details. They’re made in Japan from 14.25 oz double ringspun 100% cotton on original narrow shuttle looms from the 1930s. That’s the old-school way of doing things, and it definitely shows in the quality and feel. Plus, they come with some cool, authentic features like a deer leather patch and hidden rivets—a detail Levi’s stopped using in the '60s when they switched to bartacks.
The Fit
I went with the fuller end of a straight fit, and I decided to get them with a full break. The last pair of selvedge denim I bought ended up shortening by about an inch after a few washes, so I wanted to avoid that this time around. Plus, I’m really into the look with the full break. They remind me a little of the 3rd Cut from Our Legacy with how they puddle on my foot, even though they aren’t a flare.
I also had them hemmed to a shorter inseam by Self Edge, which was included in the cost. As a shorter guy, it’s great not having to worry about an extra alteration fee just to get the fit right.
If the length ends up being too much after some wear, I can always cuff them or get another hem. But for now, I’m excited to see how they break in and develop character over time.
Why I Chose Them
-
Authentic Reproduction: Based on the classic 1947 Levi’s 501s.
-
High-Quality Construction: Produced in Japan on 1930s narrow shuttle looms.
-
Durable Fabric: Made from 14.25 oz double ringspun cotton for that old-school feel.
-
Unique Details: Deer leather patch and hidden rivets.
-
Perfect Fit: Fuller straight fit with a full break for a classic yet modern look.
- Inclusive Service: Hemming was included in the price, which is a nice bonus for me as a shorter guy.
Looking forward to breaking these in and seeing how the fit and fades evolve. Let me know what you think or if you’ve tried the 1947 Straight Leg before!
