If you're like me you might be drawn to certain types of items which can lead to a closet without much range or diversity. Personally, I own way too many green sweatshirts and sweaters, and an overabundance of cream pants. It's not like I'm making a conscious effort to build a collection of these, I just seem to have a natural affinity for each of these types of items, and it shows in my closet.
I'm trying to add more diversity to my closet, so I try to remember to consider three factors: color, silhouette, and fabric. Color can include the actual color as well as pattern. Silhouette can mean fit, closure type, or other design details. Differences in fabric can include composition, texture, or weight differences.
When shopping for new clothes I want to create new outfit opportunities, so I'll aim for at least 2 of the 3 to be different from what I already own. If all 3 factors are different from anything else you own, then you've really got a winner.
At the end of the day it's your closet so if you really like a certain type of item then I'd still recommend going for it if only one factor is different, or even if all three factors match up to something you already own. Nonetheless considering silhouette, color, and fabric while shopping can be a great shortcut to building a wardrobe with range and diversity.
