Exploring the World of European Denim: A Review of Bonne Gueule’s Novare Jeans and Cardigan Sweater

When it comes to denim, most of us are quick to think of Japanese or American varieties. They dominate the conversation for good reasons—both have rich histories and exceptional craftsmanship. But what about European denim? Given that the fabric was invented in France, it only seems fitting to explore what this region has to offer.

A good starting point for European denim is the brand Bonne Gueule, known for their commitment to quality and style. They recently sent me their Novare Jeans and a cardigan sweater to try out, and after a few weeks of wear, I'm genuinely impressed.

Novare Jeans: A Dive Into Italian Selvedge Denim

These jeans feature a high waist and a loose cut, crafted from a robust 15 oz Italian selvedge denim sourced from Candiani, one of the most reputable weavers in the industry. The fabric has that crispness and tightly woven feel that’s characteristic of high-end selvedge denim. At €160, these jeans are a solid investment for any denim enthusiast. I can’t wait to see how they age and develop unique wear patterns over time.

As someone who’s more accustomed to mid-rise denim, the high waist initially felt a bit different. However, after breaking them in, the fit started to feel more natural and comfortable. Plus, the higher waist does wonders for elongating the legs, which is a welcome benefit for us shorter guys. When hemmed to the proper length, these are among the best jeans for short men.

The Cardigan Sweater: Perfect for Transitioning Seasons

In addition to the jeans, Bonne Gueule also sent me a cardigan sweater, which quickly became a favorite. Made from a cotton and hemp blend, this sweater is light and breathable, ideal for those late summer evenings. The unique blend of several shades of blue yarn in a marl knit adds a beautiful visual texture, making it a versatile piece that can easily transition into fall.

Why You Should Consider European Denim

Both the Novare Jeans and the cardigan sweater are made in Europe, emphasizing Bonne Gueule's dedication to European craftsmanship. With these pieces, it’s clear that European denim and apparel are not just about the fabric but also about quality, sustainability, and timeless style.

I’m looking forward to having both the sweater and the jeans as staples in my wardrobe this fall. If you’re in the market for quality denim and versatile knitwear, I highly recommend checking out Bonne Gueule. A big thank you to the team at Bonne Gueule for these fantastic pieces!
