@mikemonnette How to fade a t-shirt One tip - the t-shirt will always look a little more colorful in the water than when it's dry. It's always better to err on the side of caution and pull it out earlier, because you can always try fading it again. #fashiondiy #vintageclothing #diy ♬ snowfall - Øneheart & reidenshi
What You’ll Need
- 1 cup of liquid bleach per gallon of warm water
- A bucket (I used a 3-gallon bucket for this project)
- Your t-shirt
- A stirring stick or spoon
- A washing machine and dryer
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Bleach SolutionStart by filling your bucket with warm water. For my t-shirt, I used a 3-gallon bucket and added 3 cups of liquid bleach. This ratio works well for most t-shirts, but you can adjust based on the size of your bucket and the number of shirts you're fading.
2. Immerse and Stir
Once your bleach solution is ready, submerge the t-shirt in the mixture. Stir continuously for the first 5 minutes to ensure the bleach is evenly distributed and starts working on the fabric.
3. Periodic Stirring
After the initial 5 minutes of continuous stirring, stir the solution briefly every 5 minutes. This helps in evenly fading the t-shirt and prevents any patchy spots.
4. Check Progress
Every t-shirt and dye is different, so the time it takes to achieve your desired fade will vary. Typically, reds and other vibrant colors are harder to bleach and might take longer. For my bright red tee, I left it in the solution for about 40 minutes. However, some shirts might only need 10-15 minutes.
Pro Tip: Remember that the shirt will appear darker when wet. If you’re unsure, err on the side of caution. You can always bleach it again to lighten it more, but you can’t undo over-bleaching.
5. Rinse and Wash
Once your t-shirt has reached the desired level of fading, carefully pour out the bleach solution and thoroughly rinse the shirt with clean water. This stops the bleaching process. After rinsing, run the t-shirt through a washing machine cycle followed by a spin in the dryer.
And that’s it! You now have a perfectly faded, vintage-looking t-shirt that’s ready to wear. This method is simple, cost-effective, and can transform any overly bright shirt into a stylish, aged piece. Happy fading!
